The fact that the Ruhrverband can fulfil this task consistently and successfully is also due to one important factor: the KNOWLEDGE of its employees! This knowledge is the result of almost one hundred years of experience in water management and the know-how of our experts. It is tapped perfectly by our close inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary cooperation involving employees of all ages and professional backgrounds.

Both knowledge and experience are required for carrying out our statutory mandate to plan, construct, and operate water management facilities. One prerequisite for fulfilling this task in an efficient and targeted manner and for being able to monitor the success of our measures is to have extensive knowledge of the condition and quality of the body of water in the Ruhr catchment area. Environmental conditions are subject to constant change, influencing the body of water; legal requirements regarding the efficiency of sewage treatment have been raised continuously over the past few decades; more and more new substances and chemical compounds are entering our water. For all these reasons, it is indispensable for the Ruhrverband to engage in research & development.

The implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive in the Ruhr catchment area is closely followed by the Ruhrverband. A specialist team on river basin management bundles the Ruhrverband's knowledge and acts as consultant to the member municipalities. Knowledge transfer is a matter of course for the Ruhrverband. Schools, universities, and water experts from Germany and abroad can obtain information and teaching materials. Various events and lectures are held to pass on know-how and experience and to discuss topical questions of water management.
